There are basically five different styles of hearing aids available. The completely in the canal (CIC) aid is the newest and smallest aid available. The CIC aid is also the least visible, and it usually works well with the telephone. However, it uses the smallest battery so battery life is often very short. The canal aid is larger than the CIC and is usually visible at the entrance of the ear canal. The canal aid uses a larger battery so battery life is better than with the CIC aid. The in the ear aid fills in most of the bowl of the ear and uses a larger battery when compared to the two aids already mentioned. The behind the ear aid hangs behind the ear, and is attached to a custom-made ear mold that fits in the ear. Finally, the body aid looks like a pocket radio and is used with people who have a very severe hearing loss.
There are many factors to consider when deciding which type of aid is best for a particular patient. The audiologist will help the patient decide which aid would be best for their particular loss and needs.
